Rapid weight loss is highly prevalent in judo competitors. The level of aggressiveness in weight management behaviors seems to not be influenced by the gender or by the weight class, but it seems to be influenced by competitive level and by the age at which athletes began cutting weight.

These findings suggest that weight loss during the growth spurt phase may adversely impact normal development. It also suggested that weight loss during the junior high school years may not be a strategy to bring about better competition results.

Future studies should explore the long-term effects of weight cycling on the mental health of judo athletes and other athletes participating in weight-classified sports.

Future research could focus more on long-term effects of disordered eating in athletic populations, as the majority of studies present its direct consequences in health and performance, leaving a knowledge gap regarding the nutritional and health problems that athletes may face after completion of their athletic life.
